Abstract The French experience is a controversial topic in Brazilian historiography and, at the same time, an instigating one. The analysis of this historical episode was, for decades, inattentive to the indigenous role in the construction and maintenance of the França Equinocial project and to the process of formation of the Maranhense territory. In this article, I intend to explore the Franco-Amerindian project, analyzing the negotiations between the indigenous and the French, emphasizing the agencies of the former, demonstrating, through the reading of travel chronicles, how the natives, through their knowledge, were actors of their own histories and not just overwhelmed by the actions of the Europeans. The analysis of the narratives shows that the French company remained, even if briefly, due to the collaboration of the Tupinambá and the permanence of some elements of indigenous culture, including the parliament/assemblies and the matrimonial links that gave access to female work. And yet, that the natives did not passively accept the unilateral imposition of a new way of life, they were aware that the Portuguese were enemies of the French, and thus created strategies that imposed limits on the colonial project of the Parisians.
