Abstract

ABSTRACT   Brazil, is the largest center of species diversity of passionfruit, where two of the species are commercially grown: sweet passionfruit and the yellow passionfruit. In this country, the production of seedlings of round yellow passionfruit occurs primarily by seed, therefore the objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of gibberellic acid (AG3) in the initial development of seedlings of round yellow passionfruit. The experiment was conducted in screenhouse with intermittent irrigation and at the Laboratory of Seed Analysis. During this study seeds of round yellow passionfruit were used, subjected the three concentrations of gibberellic acid (0, 500, 1000 mg L-1 AG3), two times of immersion (48 and 96 hours) in those solutions, and two experimental conditions (screenhouse and laboratory). As the factor of concentration and immersion time increased, the percent germination was greater in both experimental conditions. Regarding seedlings height the best average was obtained with 1000 mg L-1 AG3 in immersion for 96 h and 48 h under screenhouse and in the laboratory, respectively. As for root length, the greatest average was found under screenhouse with 1000 mg L-1 AG3 and for 96 h of immersion. However, it did not differ from the laboratory conditions with 500 mg L-1 AG3 and 96 h of immersion.  The number of roots was reduced in the treatments without gibberellic acid. We concluded that under screenhouse conditions with 1000 mg L-1, AG3 and 96 h of immersion, are most appropriate for the development and growth of passionfruit seedlings.   Key words: Seedlings, laboratory, screenhouse, AG3.
