Abstract

It is a narrative review that aims to join studies that show the use of empowerment in the promoting of mental health in Brazil and other countries. It were used three terms for the search to identify the subject, limited to the recommended descriptors “Descriptors in Health Sciences [DeCS]”, translated from the Medical Subject of Health - MeSH, free of charge and presented by BIREME, where 120 papers were found. Using these three descriptors and some limits as full text, public domaintexts and human limitations, we selected thirty-four. Applied the standard of selection and exclusion, we selected eleven articles that were used for discussion. The others were discarded for not meeting the selection standard. As a result, we identified that empowerment has been discussed in manifold places in the world and has beenheavily used as a tool in the area of mental health. We realize that it may have the potential to help people improve their quality of life as they become more secure, confident, taking on the conduct of their destinations.Descriptors: Power (psychology); Mental health; Health.
