AbstractThe ritual has been one of the themes explored in the studies of sambaquis (shellmounds) in recent years and the ideas coming from post-processualist archaeology have contributed to highlight the immaterial field of sambaquis. In this work, we will present an analysis about the history of research on sambaquis in Brazil and new interpretative perspectives, based on the fields of neomaterialism, commensality and relational ontologies (animists). Finally, we seek to understand the sambaquis through an ethnoarcheology that incorporates relational prisms, and other contributions coming from ethnobiology and ethnohistory. The intersubjective relationships between crab and human in the mangrove are our keys to this. We propose here a perception of the environment that observes the landscape in sambaquis from a relational, non-anthropocentric perspective, that is, with a multiplicity of agents, human and non-human. In this way, with the help of indigenous ontologies and access to ethno-historical sources, we seek to understand the human ways of life, and the death rituals, developed in the sambaquis, in the inter-subjective relations between the crabs and diners with the mangrove.
