CALL FOR THIRTEENTH EDITION to the academic journal PIXO

In conjunction with the 2019 IAPS Symposium Aging in Place in a World of Inequalities: How to Design Healthy Cities for All that took place from November 27 to 30, 2019 in Brazil, in the city of Pelotas, promoted by the IAPS Environment and Gerontology Network, with the support from the PlaceAge Project, UFPel Behaviour Studies Laboratory and the Postgraduate course in Architecture and Urbanism (PROGRAU), is open the call for the thirteenth edition of PIXO - an academic journal of architecture, city and contemporaneity with the theme AGING IN PLACE.

Population aging has created new challenges in how to design better urban environments that support and promote everyday social involvement and healthy urban life for all. As they get older, people face limitations in their physical and cognitive abilities, changes in living arrangements and loss of social support. The preferred environment for the elderly is the community, where they can remain active, engaged, socially connected and independent. However, contemporary urban cities can be “hostile” to people 60 and older, acting as a barrier to accessing social, economic and civic opportunities.

The call recognizes that simply changing the built form is not enough to create a more inclusive environment for aging, as places are more than physical spaces. Viable environments are articulated through a strong sense of place, defined as the social, psychological, and emotional bonds that people have with their environment. A strong sense of place results from access to support for active participation, opportunities to build and sustain social networks and to assume a significant role in the community. In contrast, a sense of exclusion or “lack of opportunities for community participation” is associated with alienation, isolation and loneliness, often resulting in diverse health and well-being problems, particularly among vulnerable older people. Socially, the creation of age-friendly urban environments that support sense of place is an integral part of successful aging, ensuring that people can continue to make a positive contribution to old age, delaying the need for institutional care and reducing health and care costs. social assistance. Themes of related interest are: Memory, Identity and Sense of Place; Health, Welfare, and Environment; Social Participation, Inclusion and Gender; Universal Design and Accessibility and; Housing Challenges.

Within this theme, we invite academics, researchers, professionals and students to submit articles, essays, interviews, reviews and white wall (brief literary texts, poems, drawings, photographs, or even taking advantage of the possibilities of the Journal's electronic platform), to discuss how to plan healthy cities for all generations, responding to different environmental, social, cultural and economic impacts.

The submission of works, necessarily unpublished (or presented in HTTPS://WP.UFPEL.EDU.BR/PLACEAGE/), in Portuguese, Spanish or English, must be done by the system (HTTPS://PERIODICOS.UFPEL.EDU .BR / OJS2 / INDEX.PHP / PIXO / ABOUT / SUBMISSIONS # ONLINESUBMISSIONS), registering as “author” between 11/27/2019 and 4/6/2020.

The AGING IN PLACE issue is directed by Dr. Adriana Portella and Dr. Eduardo Rocha (both from the School of Architecture and Urbanism at Federal University of Pelotas).
