“O EXERCÍCIO DE CURAR SUPÕE O HÁBITO E COSTUME DE O FAZER”: BOTICAS E BOTICÁRIOS NO OITOCENTOS NO BRASIL MERIDIONAL

Resumo

A figura do boticário teve grande importância no Brasil, pelo menos até o último terço do século XIX. As mudanças na legislação e na fiscalização, as transformações da arte de curar com a ascensão vigorosa da medicina e da farmácia acadêmicas e a influência cada vez mais evidente de uma indústria farmacêutica, colocaram a profissão em decadência. No entanto, essa atividade – notadamente masculina – ia muito além de ser a de um simples “cozinheiro dos médicos”. As boticas eram espaços de sociabilidade gerenciadas por homens letrados que podiam combinar prestígio e saberes a ponto de ocuparem um ponto central na vida das comunidades dos oitocentos. Com base em processos-crime, inventários post-mortem, artigos de jornais, documentos da cúria e do governo do Rio Grande do Sul, em comparação com a rica historiografia brasileira sobre o tema, pretendemos apresentar um quadro da dinâmica dessas boticas e dos seus boticários e sua inserção na capital da província mais meridional do império brasileiro.______________________________________________Abstract: The figure of the apothecary had great importance in Brazil, at least until the last third of the 19th century. Changes in legislation and enforcement, transformations in the art of healing with the vigorous rise of academic medicine and pharmacy and the increasingly evident influence of a pharmaceutical industry have put the profession in decline. However, this activity – notably male – went far beyond being a simple “cook for doctors”. Apothecaries were spaces of sociability managed by literate men who could combine prestige and knowledge to the point of occupying a central point in the life of communities in the eighties. Based on criminal proceedings, post-mortem inventories, newspaper articles, religious and governmental documents of Rio Grande do Sul, in comparison with the rich Brazilian historiography on the subject, we intend to present a picture of the dynamics of these apothecaries and their insertion in the provincial capital.
