AS DOENÇAS E O ATENDIMENTO AOS ENFERMOS NOS PRIMÓRDIOS DA OCUPAÇÃO DO CONTINENTE DE SÃO PEDRO (SÉCULO XVIII).

Resumo

A proposta deste trabalho é mostrar, a partir da análise e cotejamento dos documentos transcritos nos Anais do Arquivo Histórico do Rio Grande do Sul (v. 1, 1977) com a bibliografia de referência sobre o tema, as causas que motivavam as doenças que acometiam os soldados e os primeiros colonos instalados na Vila de Rio Grande, no século XVIII. Através da trajetória de Sebastião Gomes de Carvalho, primeiro cirurgião do Rio Grande de São Pedro, apresentamos as condições encontradas pelos colonos e soldados instalados em uma região fronteiriça da América portuguesa. Nossa hipótese é que as doenças eram motivadas pelas condições do ambiente, potencializadas pela falta de estrutura, e, nesse sentido, veremos como se davam alguns atendimentos aos enfermos. Procuramos também demonstrar que a condição muito particular do Continente de São Pedro, uma área em constante litígio e com péssimas condições estruturais para o atendimento aos enfermos, definirá as estratégias traçadas pelo cirurgião para sua ascensão social._____________________________________________Abstract: The purpose of this work is to show, from the analysis and comparison of the documents transcribed in the Proceedings of the Historical Archive of Rio Grande do Sul (v. 1, 1977) with the reference bibliography on the subject, the causes that motivated the diseases that affected the soldiers and the first settlers installed in the village of Rio Grande in the 18th century. Through the trajectory of Sebastião Gomes de Carvalho, the first surgeon in Rio Grande de São Pedro, we present the conditions found by settlers and soldiers installed in a border region of Portuguese America. Our hypothesis is that the diseases were motivated by the conditions of the environment, enhanced by the lack of structure, and, in this sense, we will see how some care was provided to the sick. We also try to demonstrate that the very particular condition of the São Pedro Continent, an area in constant litigation and with terrible structural conditions for the care of the sick, will define the strategies outlined by the surgeon for his social ascension.
