RELATOS E IMAGENS DE UMA NÃO-VIAGEM: O GAÚCHO NA OBRA DE JEAN-BAPTISTE DEBRET

Reports and images of a non-trip: the gaucho in the work of Jean-Baptiste DebretResumo: O presente estudo, que está inserido em uma pesquisa maior e que objetiva analisar a construção da imagem do gaucho na Argentina, Uruguai e Brasil no século XX, tem por foco central perceber a maneira com a qual o artista francês Jean-Baptiste Debret elaborou a figura do gaúcho em uma série de aquarelas que, até meados dos anos 1950, era desconhecida do público brasileiro. Assim, é precisamente a partir desse conjunto de imagens, que atualmente configura-se na chamada Coleção Castro Maya, que se pretende indagar não apenas a produção de cunho gauchesco e sulino do artista, mas, igualmente, os entornos de sua possível viagem ao sul do Brasil. O que se pretende é, pois, problematizar um conjunto de imagens que, carentes de análises, desde muitos anos têm sido utilizadas, apenas, como ilustração. Além disso, consideradas como instantâneos resultantes da acurada observação e desenho de Debret ou, ainda, como registros precisos da viagem ao sul do Brasil, elas foram parcialmente relacionadas junto a outras fontes que, possivelmente, serviram ao artista como base para tais produções. Nesse caso, a construção de imagens e relatos a partir de uma não-viagem, isto é, de um não-deslocamento, proporciona, além do entendimento da forma com a qual Debret elaborou seus gaúchos e paisagens sulinas, a maneira com que serviu-se de outros elementos para realizar sua possível viagem imaginária ao pampa.Palavras-chave: Jean-Baptiste Debret. Imagem. Abstract: The central focus of the present study, which is part of a larger research that aims to analyze the construction of the image of the gaucho in Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil in the 20th century, is to perceive the ways in which the French artist Jean-Baptiste Debret elaborated the figure of the gaucho in a series of watercolors that, until the mid-1950’s was unknown to the Brazilian public. Thus, it is precisely from this set of images, which is currently configured in the so-called Castro Maya Collection, that it is intended to investigate not only the production of the artist's southern and gaucho style, but also the surroundings of his possible trip to southern Brazil. The intention, therefore, is to problematize a set of images that, lacking analysis, have been used for many years only as an illustration. Furthermore, considered as snapshots resulting from Debret's accurate observation and drawing, or even as precise records of the trip to southern Brazil, they were partially related to other sources that possibly served the artist as a basis for such productions. In this case, the construction of images and reports from a non-travel, that is, from a non-displacement, provides, in addition to an understanding of the way in which Debret elaborated his gauchos and southern landscapes, the way he served from other elements to carry out his possible imaginary trip to the pampa.Keywords: Jean-Baptiste Debret.
