Fragments from the past in the present
breakage in polished stone blades and resistence tests
Abstract
Little investment has been devoted to the study of polished stone blades, and even less to the study of fragments of these blades. However, a broad study of these blades, present in the collections of various institutions, from north to south of Brazil, allowed us to notice that there was a significant number of broken slides and, above all, that there was a certain regularity in the shapes of the breaks. Here we analyze these most common breaks, trying to describe them and, more than that, identify their causes. For this purpose, in addition to analyzing the collections, in an experimental archeology work, we built replicas and carried out resistance tests, aiming to know the resistance of polished blades to the application of forces and the potential causes of the breaks observed in the archaeological material. In this way, we were able to estimate the force that a blade in a handle is capable of resisting before fragmenting, as well as understand some of the mechanisms involved in breakages.
