Human bone artifact in the Sambaqui de Camboinhas, Niterói – RJ
Abstract
The return to Sambaqui de Camboinhas, in Niterói, confirmed the preservation at that site of stratigraphically preserved layers and intact features, as well as human presence since the middle Holocene and diverse archaeological materials, including a human bone artifact, an unprecedented find for this site. The antiquity attested on this occasion was through radiocarbon dating of an otolith, 4500 to 3979 BP. The human bone described was made from a distal diaphyseal segment of an adult or subadult radius and presents two parabolic cuts in the diaphysis, which still retain the marks left by the instrument that sectioned the bone. However, it is not possible to define its functionality. Although described for other coastal sites in Rio de Janeiro, artifacts in human bones and teeth constitute rare finds whose study must be in-depth and may be accompanied by special significance, especially associated with funerary structures.
