Kulumbu black food: Flavors and memories shared among women on the border between Brazil and French Guiana

Abstract

In this visual essay, we present the story of a black quilombola community that evokes the name of Kulumbu, a typical food from French Guiana, appropriated as part of the cuisine and identity of the Kulumbu do Patuazinho community. This quilombo is located in the urban area of Oiapoque, in the north of the State of Amapá, a border area between Brazil and French Guiana. Based on ethnography and oral history, we present an unprecedented record of the preparation of Kulumbu food, a culinary knowledge shared mainly among black women. The results of this study allow us to understand the intertwining between food, memory, issues related to local ontology and the identity of this community.
