Black intellectual in the south: The trajectory of Oliveira Silveira
Abstract
This text aims at reviewing some aspects of the political and intellectual trajectory of the poet Oliveira Silveira. It has been observed that his educational background is not composed by a unique discursive matrix, but by a variety of influences such as African, Afro-Caribbean and North-American, which are originated from different points of the “Black Atlantic”. In addition to these influences, it is possible to notice in Oliveira’s work the strength of a regional dimension, which can be seen through his claim for an identity based on the state of Rio Grande do Sul. As a provisional conceptualization, it is proposed in this text to place Oliveira Silveira as a black, contemporary, hybrid and diasporic intellectual. His thoughts and work
represent important contributions to the narratives about the reconfiguration of the national identity.
