COMBATE À CARESTIA NAS PÁGINAS DA IMPRENSA NEGRA: JORNAL O EXEMPLO (PORTO ALEGRE, 1917-1919)

Fighting famine in the pages of the black press: newspaper O Exemplo (Porto Alegre, 1917-1919) O objetivo deste texto é abordar como a imprensa negra no Pós-abolição, especificamente o jornal O Exemplo de Porto Alegre, tratou a carestia de vida sentida pela população da cidade entre os anos de 1917 e 1919, bem como quais as estratégias de enfrentamento para o problema foram propostas pelo mesmo. Parto do entendimento de que as diferentes formas de organização negra na Primeira República foram essenciais para o alcance de direitos básicos para o conjunto da classe trabalhadora ao longo do século XX. Procuro, também, contribuir para os estudos que articulam a história social do trabalho, da Primeira República e o campo de estudos sobre o Pós-abolição no Brasil.Palavras-chave: Pós-abolição. Carestia. Abstract: This paper aims to approach how the black press in the post-abolition period, specifically Porto Alegre’s “O Exemplo” journal, addressed the cost of living felt by the population of the city between the years of 1917 and 1919, as well as which strategies were proposed by this communication vehicle to face that problem. Here, I start with the understanding that the different forms of black organization in the First Republic were essential for the achievement of basic rights by the whole working class throughout the 20th century. I also seek to contribute for studies which articulate the social History of work, History of the First Republic and the field of post-abolition studies in Brazil.Keywords: Post-abolition.
