O HORROR “SOCIALMENTE RELEVANTE” DA EC COMICS: UMA ANÁLISE DA HISTÓRIA EM QUADRINHOS “THE PATRIOTS” DE 1952

Resumo

The “socially relevant” horror of EC Comics: an analysis of the 1952 graphic novel “The Patriots”Resumo: Este artigo se dedica a analisar a história em quadrinhos chamada “The Patriots” publicada no número #2 da revista Shock SuspenStories, de abril e maio de 1952, da editora estadunidense EC Comics. A EC Comics ficou conhecida nos anos 1950 pelas suas publicações de horror e suspense que, em certas medidas, desafiavam as convenções e a moralidade da época, marcada profundamente pelos embates da Guerra Fria na política externa e do macarthismo e anticomunismo na esfera doméstica. A narrativa analisada neste trabalho se insere em uma série de histórias da editora que efetuam uma crítica social explícita à política do período, no caso presente, a crítica à cruzada anticomunista, ao macarthismo, e à chamada “caça às bruxas” realizada no período. É em referência a esse contexto que iremos analisar a história, inserindo sua crítica no plano de fundo em que foi escrita e contrapô-la aos eventos políticos dos anos 1950 com os quais ela estabelece diálogo.Palavra-chave: EC Comics; Shock SuspenStories; macarthismo. Abstract: This article aims to analysis the comic book called “The Patriots” published in the issue 2 of Shock SuspenStories magazine, April and May 1952, from the American publisher EC Comics. EC Comics was known in the 1950s for its horror and suspense publications that, to some extent, defied convention and the morality of the time, deeply marked by the Cold War's clashes in foreign policy and McCarthyism and anti-communism in the domestic sphere. The narrative analyzed in this work is part of a series of stories by the publisher that carry out an explicit social criticism of the politics of the period, in this case, the criticism of the anti-communist crusade, McCarthyism, and the so-called “witch hunt” carried out in the period. It is in reference to this context that we will analyze the story, analyze its criticism in the background in which it was written and contrast it with the political events of the 1950s with which it dialogue.Keyword: EC Comics; Shock SuspenStories; McCarthyism.
