Abstract

Changes in values and customs of European bourgeoisie population in the late 19th century and early 20th century were soon assimilated in Brazil. A worldview that is enunciated with marks another in a euphoric period in a speech of modernity, changes in lifestyle of society. Ideas of progress and civilization published in the press and anchored in its Belle Époque. This work aims at a brief exploratory study of the printed media in Pelotas from the half of the 19th century, in order to understand the process of transformation of the city, which hit also the press. As theoretical and methodological basis, we used the theory of discursive semiotics.
