The TOEFL-ITP test within the Ciências sem Fronteiras Program
Abstract
This paper reports an analysis of a test called TOEFL ITP within an academic exchange program of Ministério da Educação (MEC). The purpose was to identify to what extent and how it tests English proficiency of candidates. The corpus is formed by a book entitled TOEFL ITP Official Handbook. The results indicate that the TOEFL ITP does not have a section designed to test candidate’s oral production. Besides that, the section called “Structure and Written Expression” in fact does not test written production in English. Thus, the TOEFL ITP does not test these two important skills in an academic context.
