Climate Change in Rio Grande do Sul
Abstract
First Paragraph
It is evident that the global climatic condition is becoming increasingly alarming and pressing. The climatic events that occurred in Rio Grande do Sul between June and October 2023 demonstrated the proximity of such phenomena, underscoring the critical importance of raising awareness among the population and public authorities regarding the responsibility to reverse and mitigate this scenario. The impact of natural disasters destabilizes not only the social fabric of the residents in affected regions but also an entire cycle ranging from species biodiversity and ecosystems to agriculture. In Pelotas, the city of residence, the presence of aquatic animals such as sea lions was observed along the shoreline, having been transported by strong ocean currents, which poses a significant risk to the species displaced from its natural habitat. It was also noted that rainfall, winds, and flooding severely impacted rural zones, where a significant portion of the population of Pelotas and Rio Grande do Sul resides, many of whom are responsible for the nation's food supply.
