Rain that Brought Tranquility, Rain that Brings Fear
Abstract
First Paragraph: I was raised in the small district of Barra de São João, located within the municipality of Casimiro de Abreu, Rio de Janeiro, approximately 130 km from the state capital. With a population of roughly 8,000 inhabitants, the locality is regarded by the majority of its residents as an idyllic enclave. Situated along the coastline, the acoustic landscape—characterized by the breaking of waves—fosters a profound sense of peace for those observing from the shore, even during episodes of violent ocean surges. The sound of intense rainfall striking the foliage of gigantic, centennial almond trees consistently evokes positive sentiments, intrinsically linked to the certainty of nature’s vitality and the significant benefits derived from the precipitation that diligently irrigates the land. Even the whistling of the wind, which blows frequently and with considerable intensity, serves as a harbinger of sunny days and coastal tranquility. It is, undoubtedly, an existence that aligns with the highest aspirations of most individuals. It was within this bucolic and paradisiacal setting that I resided until the age of twenty-eight.
