Implications of Climate Events on Waste Picker Organizations in Rio Grande do Sul/RS

Abstract

Abstract: The research highlights the challenges encountered by recyclable material collectors, particularly during calamitous events, such as the floods observed between June and October 2023 in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. An analysis of news websites reveals a scarcity of information regarding these collectors and their specific needs, indicating a lacuna in media coverage and a deficiency in public policy attention. The National Movement of Recyclable Material Collectors (MNCR) plays a pivotal role in fundraising efforts to support the affected organizations, underscoring the significance of civil society initiatives in light of the shortcomings present in public policies and conventional media.
