Climate Disasters and Mental Health: Report of a Psychiatrist’s Experience During the Floods in Vale do Taquari/RS

Abstract

Abstract: This article presents an experience report detailing the provision of mental health care by a psychiatrist in the municipality of Roca Sales, one of the areas most severely affected by the flood that occurred in September 2023 in the Taquari Valley, Rio Grande do Sul. Information regarding other locales impacted by phenomena associated with climate change is synthesized to report on the short-, medium-, and long-term mental health impacts on the affected population. Furthermore, preparedness actions for future events are proposed, aiming to ensure more rapid and efficient responses regarding immediate mental health care, as well as the subsequent follow-up and treatment of resulting psychiatric and relational disorders.
