The Pro-German Press in Rio de Janeiro during the First World War
Abstract
Abstract: This article aims to explain how periodicals in Rio de Janeiro that were favorably positioned toward the German Empire structured their publications in conjunction with the Reich's wartime propaganda system. Along with this objective, it seeks to identify the agents involved in building the Germanophile press in the capital of the Republic, their motivations, and their interconnections, which acted as connectors. For this analysis, the newspaper A Tribuna and the magazine Vozes de Petrópolis were chosen because they were continuously mentioned as vehicles for pro-German propaganda and discourse by both Allied government documentation and that produced by the Rio-Deutsche. It is understood that these periodic press organs were not only platforms for the military campaign goals of the Reich in World War I but also actors in building their own conveniences through interpretations of the conflagration.
