A Imprensa Militar, difusora de cultura intelectual e cultura política: sua criação e a Primeira Guerra Mundial
The Military Press, Disseminator of Intellectual and Political Culture: Its Creation and the First World War
Abstract
Abstract: The present study analyzes the role of the Brazilian Military Press as a vehicle for the dissemination of intellectual and political culture, with emphasis on the context of the First World War. Drawing on the technical shortcomings observed during the War of the Triple Alliance, it examines the process of professionalization of the land forces that culminated in the creation of the Army Library and the strengthening of the General Staff. The research highlights the bibliographic production during the global conflict, which reflects the transition from diplomatic neutrality to the technical analysis of combat in loco. It demonstrates that, beyond military instruction, the Military Press harnessed knowledge production to legitimize the Army as an intellectual vanguard. It concludes that such publications sought to consolidate a cohesive corporate identity and to affirm the political authority of the military institution as an indispensable agent for national development and defense in the face of the transformations brought about by modern warfare.
