Tradition and science
tensions in the teaching of contemporary Portuguese language
Abstract
In Brazil, the teaching of Portuguese Language has drawn attention over last decades of 20th century. Although contemporary linguistic and educational studies aim to contribute to the teaching and learning process, the knowledge of students of their mother tongue has not still been satisfactory. Thus, teachers have often been charged for this failure, due to the use of Traditional and Normative Grammar. Based on data from our doctoral research, we discuss how traditional and scientific knowledge are present and influence the Portuguese language’s teaching and learning process, to reflect on the knowledge presented by teachers.
